Wigwam offers two distinct products for managing your crypto: Wigwam Extension and Wigwam App. Each is built with different security models and user needs in mind. Here’s how they compare.
Two different security models
Wigwam Extension uses the classical seed phrase system. This means you hold and control your own private keys. You have full ownership of your funds, but you’re also fully responsible for safeguarding your seed phrase. If you lose it, you lose access.
What is a seed phrase?
A seed phrase is a list of 12 words that acts as the master key to your crypto wallet. Your tokens are stored on the blockchain, and the seed phrase is the only way to restore access if your device is lost or reset. With Wigwam Extension, protecting this phrase is your sole responsibility.
Wigwam App, on the other hand, introduces MPC (Multi-Party Computation) protection, eliminating the need for a seed phrase. Instead of one device holding your full private key, it is split into two parts:
- One part is securely stored on your device.
- Another is cryptographically protected and tied to your email.
These pieces combine only when signing a transaction, ensuring enhanced security and convenience.
Why MPC matters
- No single point of failure: Even if one part is compromised, your wallet remains secure.
- Enhanced protection: Your full private key is never exposed.
- Cross-device access: Restore or access your wallet from multiple devices without depending on a single seed phrase.

Because Wigwam Extension and Wigwam App are built on different technologies, they are not yet compatible with each other. Each product is designed with a different user profile in mind.
